2019 Guest Speaker

Seth Vredenburg, DVM

Senior Manager, Learning and Development

Mars Veterinary Health

Dr. Vredenburg is a 2010 graduate of Iowa State University and currently a member of the Talent and Learning team for Mars Veterinary Health. His career started with Banfield as an associate veterinarian in New York City. Here as a new graduate he helped open and build the clientele of two new hospitals all while learning how to practice medicine in real practice. He took on additional responsibilities when he was asked to be a coach for new associates being hired.
In 2012 Dr. Vredenburg took a chance and moved across the country to become a Chief of Staff of a hospital in the Portland area. This added an additional layer of complexity to the job, ensuring that the medical team was on the same page to provide quality consistent care to the patients in the hospital. While developing a strong and effective team he was instrumental in the growth of his hospital as well as his team. Taking on that responsibility added additional layers of stress to his life that he wasn’t aware of how to manage.
After five years of practice Dr. Vredenburg took a step out of the clinic to start focusing on a new career path, helping others develop the skills needed to be successful. Through self-reflection and time, he learned how the routine stressors of the veterinary profession impacted him. He also took it upon himself to become a certified compassion fatigue professional. Now, as a learning professional and a veterinarian, he brings a different perspective to the training that Mars provides their associates. His unique take helps veterinary professionals relate to topics that impact them on a daily basis.

Dr. Sarah Guess - 2018 Keynote Speaker

Veterinarians need to make hundreds or thousands of decisions each day. There are many internal and external factors that influence how, why, and when these decisions are made. Being aware of the bias in our own mind can reduce medical error and improve clinical skills. Understanding the process behind our thinking is a key factor
in being the best clinicians we can be. There is a large volume of literature on this topic and Dr. Guess’s focus during this lecture is to introduce the concept of cognitive bias and metacognition and touch on a few key examples.

Dr. Sarah Guess is a Pacific Northwest native, originally from Liberty Lake, WA. She graduated from the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She went on to complete a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery in Mesa, AZ. In 2016, Dr. Guess completed her Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency at Kansas State University and was voted “Resident of the Year” by the senior veterinary students. She also graduated summa cumme laude in May 2016 with a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences from Kansas State University.

Dr. Guess enjoys  all aspects of internal medicine, and is diligently pursing a board certification in small animal internal medicine. She is especially passionate about acute/chronic kidney disease, geriatric feline and canine medicine, endocrinology, immune mediated disease, infectious disease, and endoscopy.

Dr. Guess truly loves living in the Pacific Northwest. She loves running in her free time, and completed the Portland Marathon in 2014 and the Seattle Half Marathon in 2015. She also enjoys spending time outdoors and at the beach.

Dr. troy holder

Dr. Holder will speak on the importance of nonverbal communication in effective communication for veterinarians.

Dr Troy Holder is a native of Barbados. He graduated from the University of the West Indies College of Veterinary in 1998. He worked in pig production medicine and small animal general practice for 4 years post-graduation.  In 2003, he completed a one-year internship in equine surgery at London Equine Hospital in London Ontario Canada. He went on to the University of Tennessee for a second internship in large animal medicine and surgery and a three-year large animal surgery residency. He is board certified in Large Animal surgery with the ACVS. In 2007, he joined the faculty at Kansas State University College of Veterinary as an equine emergency surgeon. Looking for a change in 2010, he moved to Portland Oregon to work at Willamette Equine Hospital in Aurora.

After 4 years in private practice, he wanted to return to academia and missed the interaction with veterinary students. In 2014, he had the opportunity to join the faculty at Midwestern University in Glendale Arizona. Being a new veterinary college and prior to accepting their first class, he was fortunate to work closely in curriculum development with emphasis on effective communication for veterinarians.  He had the opportunity receive training from Dr. Jane Shaw from Colorado State University who is recognized as a pioneer in teaching communication for veterinarians. With a love for the Pacific Northwest, he jumped at the opportunity to join OSU as a clinical assistant professor of Large Animal Surgery.

Outside of work, he enjoys horse racing, playing tennis, travelling to any destination with a beach and frequent trips back to Barbados to spend time with his five-year-old daughter and extended family.
