Oregon Leadership Experience and Dedicated Service (OLEADS) is:

  • A weekend leadership experience designed to give veterinary students and professionals the tools, knowledge, and confidence necessary to be emotionally intelligent servant-leaders for the profession.

  • Servant leadership: a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations, and ultimately creates a more just and caring world.

  • A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid,” servant leadership is different. The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.

  • A strong base of emotional intelligence can be used to improve client outcome and communication with the client, provide a sense of community with your classmates and faculty, and gain appropriate methods to deal with stress.

  • Burnout, compassion fatigue, depression, and Imposter Syndrome are common in the veterinary profession. Practicing high-quality wellness habits and identifying your servant leadership strengths can help provide balance.
